Oberheim was founded in 1969 by Tom Oberheim and was a pioneer in polyphonic synthesis. The Oberheim SEM (1974) was a compact semi-modular synthesizer with characteristic state-variable filters. The Oberheim OB-X (1979) was a polyphonic synthesizer that competed with the Prophet-5. The Oberheim OB-8 (1983) offered expanded modulation options and was used by artists like Prince and Depeche Mode.
